# Books open. Forty DMs. _Now with a €40 deposit._

You post “books open” and the inbox fills: reference images, “how much for a forearm piece?”, “can you do next Friday?”. You quote twenty people, book eight, and three of them never turn up. This is the same books-open post with a payment rail under it: a consultation request that costs €40 to send, a fixed number of spots, a countdown, and a deposit that goes towards the session. You reply with a quote and a slot within three days, or the money goes back on its own.

Free to start. You keep 80%. Requests you don't answer in time refund themselves.

## The consultation request
that replaces _the DM._

Idea, placement and size, up to five reference images, a budget range. That is the enquiry phase of a proper studio intake and nothing more. No health questions here: consent and medical history belong at the appointment, on paper, not in a paid form. Cap the spots at twenty, set the countdown to the Sunday you close, and the form shuts itself when either runs out.

What you send back

## A quote and a slot.
_Not a conversation._

Your reply is the quote, the estimated hours and a link to pick the session. The €40 is already on account and comes off the session deposit. If the idea isn't for you, decline in a sentence and the deposit refunds itself; nobody argues with a refund that has already happened. Twelve requests answered in an evening is the whole books-open week.

**Quote** — €380, one session of about three hours. I'd drop the moth to 60% so the carrot reads at that size.

**Next step** — Pick a session below. €150 deposit, your €40 is already credited, balance in cash or card at the studio.

**Before you book** — Rescheduling is free until 72 h before. Under 72 h the session deposit is kept; see the policy on the booking page.

## Four products,
switched on _in this order._

No community: your clients don't want a Discord, they want a slot. The form catches the books-open rush, the calendar takes the session deposit, the waitlist fills cancellations, and the letter announces the next window to people who already asked.

Day one · Forms & Requests

    ### Books open: consultation request, capped spots, countdown _€40 deposit_

Idea, placement and size, five reference images, a budget range. Twenty spots, a countdown to the day you close, a three-day reply window. Your quote counts as the answer; the €40 is credited to the session.

2. 2

    Day one · Bookings

    ### Session deposit into your calendar _€150_

Studio days only, Google Calendar synced, a fifteen-minute hold while they pay. Cancellation policy on the booking page: free reschedule until 72 h before, deposit kept inside that. Reminders at 48 h and the morning of.

    ### Cancellation & books-closed waitlist _free_

One form for two lists. Contacts are tagged by size and style, so when a Thursday opens up you email the “small pieces” segment and it is filled in hours, not days. Between windows the same form is the books-closed waitlist.

    Week four · Newsletter

    ### Books-open dates & flash drops _free_

Monthly. The next window, the flash sheet, one healed piece, one aftercare note. The agent drafts it from your recent posts; you edit for ten minutes and send to the waitlist before Instagram sees it.

_Ines · books open · monthly · first Sunday_

#### October books open Sunday 5th, 18:00 — 20 spots, flash sheet inside

The window

Consultation requests open Sunday 5 October at 18:00 and close when twenty are in or on Sunday 12th, whichever comes first. €40 deposit, credited to your session.

Flash sheet

Eight new designs, palm-sized, €180–260 each, one of each. Reply with the number; first paid deposit takes it.

Healed

The wild-carrot forearm from June, six months on. Fine line holds if you keep it out of the sun for the first month. Photo attached.

Aftercare, one thing

Stop using the second-skin wrap after day four. Longer than that and you're trading a clean heal for a milky one.

Cancellation list

Two Thursday afternoons opened in October. Join the list at applyform.app/c/ines-ink/waitlist and you hear first.

## What the monthly letter
_actually contains._

The next window with the exact time, the flash sheet with prices, one healed piece, one aftercare note, the cancellation list. Five blocks, every month, all free. It exists so that the people who asked to be told get told before the algorithm decides whether to show them the post.

The agent drafts it from what you posted this month and the dates in your calendar. You change the aftercare note and the prices and send it.

The operating rhythm

## One evening of admin
a _week._

Books-open used to be a week of DMs. With the deposit form it is an evening of quotes, and the rest of the month runs on the calendar and the waitlist. Below is what a month looks like once the four products are on; the fixed points are the Sunday the window opens and the evening you answer.

- First Sunday

    **Books open at 18:00**

Letter goes out an hour before, then the Instagram post. The form takes twenty requests and closes itself.

- Wednesday

    **Quote evening**

Twelve to twenty requests answered in one sitting: quote, hours, slot link. Anything you don't want, decline in a line; the deposit refunds itself.

- Weekly

    **Fill the gaps**

A cancellation comes in, you email the matching waitlist segment. Studios using a waitlist report about 40% fewer idle hours.

- Studio days

    **Consent form and the needle**

Health and consent questions are asked here, on paper, with a signature. Not on the paid form.

Why these prices

## Numbers from
the _market._

**68%** of tattoo shops already require a deposit

Most commonly $50–100, or 25–50% of the session with a $50–100 floor. A €40 consultation deposit credited to a €150 session deposit sits inside that norm.

**22% → 8%** cancellations, without and with a deposit

Tattoo no-shows average 14% and run 8–20%. 85% of artists say a non-refundable deposit is essential to the business.

**≈ €280** what one missed two-hour slot costs

Three no-shows a month is more than €800 of studio time. The €150 session deposit covers the chair; the €40 request deposit filters the enquiries.

**44%** of shops book primarily through Instagram

69% still take bookings by DM or phone and only 31% offer online booking. The deposit rail is what the DM is missing.

**20–30%** what the booking apps take on a new client

Fresha charges 20% (minimum $6) on marketplace-sourced clients, StyleSeat 30% of the first appointment. ApplyForm's 20% on a €40 request is €8, with no monthly plan.

**40%** fewer idle hours with a working waitlist

Studios that run a cancellation list and send one-click deposit links fill open slots in hours rather than days.

Market figures from published industry and platform data, September 2026, rounded. Your prices, volume and retention will differ.

Common worries

## “Won't people refuse
_to pay to ask?_”

Some will, at first. Around 39% of service businesses see pushback when they introduce deposits and for nine in ten of them it fades within three months. 72% of consumers accept a deposit that is applied to the final bill, 83% when the service costs more than €100, which every tattoo does. Say “credited to your session” on the form and show the refund rule before the pay button; those two lines do most of the work.

**“Can I ask about allergies and medication on the form?”**

Not on this one. Health and consent answers are special-category data under GDPR and need their own consent at the appointment. The paid form asks about the idea, the placement and the budget; the medical questionnaire stays at the studio, on the day. The agent keeps those fields out.

**“What if I don't reply in three days?”**

The buyer is refunded automatically and told why; you get a nudge at half-time and again near the end. Cap the spots at the number you can quote in one evening so the window never bites.

**“Is a non-refundable deposit even allowed?”**

A deposit tied to the loss you actually suffer is more defensible than a flat forfeit. The booking page states the schedule: free reschedule until 72 h before, deposit kept inside that. EU buyers have a 14-day withdrawal right on distance contracts unless the service starts inside the window; the checkout wording covers it.

## Make “books open”
_a €40 request._

Tell the agent your Instagram handle. It reads your grid and your last books-open post, proposes the request form, the session deposit and the waitlist with your prices, and sets them up when you create the account.
